The original posting on CowGarage was the photo essay, THE KEY TO MY GRANDFATHER’S HOUSE , a very personal but also universal story of Italian immigrant roots and my trip to Italy to explore them.

How did “CowGarage” get its name?

*

The name “CowGarage” comes from my Italian family history. In the old country of Italy, for most rural Italians, a cow was a must.  In this country, during the depression, it become necessity here. Despite their new life in a Lorain, Ohio neighborhood, the newly immigrated Imbrogno family still kept a cow. They didn’t have a barn. They did have a garage.  That’s where the cow lived.

Each morning my father, on his way to school, would take the cow to the edge of the airport and  stake her out to graze.  On his way home he would pick her up and take her home to the CowGarage.

So, What Happened to the Cow?

The original CowGarage

Nearly seventy years after the cow, with the help of my aunt’s and uncles, I found the original family house and the original CowGarage.  The family then living in the house was very hospitable. They toured me through the home and allowed me time alone with the “cow garage.” A month later they were gone and the house and garage were abandoned.

I asked my Uncle Bob what happened to the cow. He said, “She died.” I figured that but what happened to her, I asked?  “We ate her.”  You mean you just did her in and ate her? “Naw, she died on her own.”  Didn’t you want to know what she died of before you ate her?  He said, “Yeah, she died from swallowing an inner tube so she was OK to eat.”

I dedicate CowGarage to her memory.
